Loving Arms Pushing For Healthcare Bill Tweaks
7/31/2009
A local agency that assists women and families experiencing unplanned pregnancies is urging members of Congress to amend healthcare reform legislation that would include coverage for abortions. A letter from Taylorville based ‘Loving Arms Crisis Pregnancy Center’ Executive Director Cathy Coker expresses concerns over the legislation that includes the cornerstones of ‘The Freedom of Choice Act,’ and which they say would force virtually every American into a health plan that mandates abortion coverage. Coker says this could drive up the number of abortions currently performed by 33%.
Click here for audioIn addition, Coker says the passage of the bill as is would create a disproportionate number of women in need of post abortion care, rather than those seeking preventative and interventional services from agencies similar to loving arms.

7/28/2009
Taylorville Mayor Greg Brotherton’s son is making quite a name for himself on the west coast. Clint Brotherton lives in Phoenix, Arizona and has established himself as a professional poker player. The 25-year old spent the first few months of this summer with friends in Las Vegas while participating in the 2009 World Series of Poker, including the 10,000-dollar buy-in No-Limit Texas Hold ‘Em ‘Main Event’. Although Brotherton says the summer went well overall, he says in the end the cards just didn’t fall his way.

After exiting the Main Event, Brotherton came home to Taylorville to visit family, attend a wedding, and play in the ‘Tornado Open’. Brotherton will soon head back to Phoenix, and resume his career as a professional poker player. He plans to set up shop in Vegas once again next year for the 2010 World Series of Poker.

The DNR has submitted a request for proposal, in hopes of attracted a prospective manager to reopen the resort and golf course, which was court ordered closed earlier this month amidst mold problems and a pending foreclosure. Representative Flider says if run properly, the Eagle Creek Resort could provide a big boost for the local economy.
Flider says the state is in the early process of trying to get the resort back up on its feet. He says it would probably be next year at the earliest before the resort and golf course could re-open.
The closing earlier this month took about 50 jobs with it, and forced brides and others to reschedule booked events. While the golf course and resort are closed, the Eagle Creek State park remains open. The land is currently leased by the state from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and is currently under the control on the DNR.
