Taylorville Says NO To Fireworks

As we celebrate the birth of our nation, the Taylorville Fire Department wants to remind partygoers that setting off Fireworks in the city is ILLEGAL, and permits will not be granted for people to do so.
Fire Chief Jeff Hackney says that the State Fire Marshall has laid out guidelines that requires training for people to have fireworks granted to them, but the city has adopted a policy to simply not offer the classes, and not grant permits.

Celebrate Independennce Day With These Activities

Festivities will abound across Central Illinois this weekend as we celebrate Independence Day. Locally, the Taylorville Optimist Club will once again sponsor the fourth of July celebration at Lake Taylorville Marina. There is no entry fee for the event, which begins at 2 o’clock, but donations will be accepted. Optimist Steve Turner explains the day will be chock full of activities leading up to the ginormous fireworks show at Kiwanis Park at Dusk.

Rep Shimkus Gives Money To Shelby County

Congressman John Shimkus was in Shelbyville Thursday for a check presentation ceremony, after securing a more than 280 thousand dollar grant for Shelby County to improve Communications equipment. Shimkus says that many rural parts of central Illinois are still not able to receive adequate cell phone and two- way radio communication. He says he hopes the funds will ease the communication process for first responders and emergency personnel.

Roadside Safety Checks Coming To An Area Near You

The ‘You Drink, You Drive, You Lose’ campaign is underway just in time for the Fourth of July holiday…with a special emphasis on late night drunk drivers.
Experts are looking not just at the number of drunk drivers out on the roads…but when they are mostly likely to get into accidents. State Traffic Safety Director Mike Stout says midnight through six a-m is the deadliest time of day.

For starters, DNR spokesperson Chris McCloud says you should really wear a life jacket. In fact, for some, it’s the law.

Flider Fights For Four Lanes On 29

–State Rep. Bob Flider urged Governor Quinn to give the state a much need economic shot-in-the arm by taking action on the $29 billion statewide capital construction program that includes the widening of Route 29 from 2 lanes to four. House Bills 255, 312 and 2400, which comprise separate legislative components of the $29 billion statewide capital construction program arrived on the Governor’s desk Tuesday. The bills would provide funding for new development projects that will fix Illinois’ roads, bridges and transit system and in doing so will creates thousands of high paying jobs for Illinois workers.

Real Estate Taxes Due July 17th

The Christian County Treasurer’s Office wants to remind homeowners that the first installment of Real Estate Taxes are coming due. The forms were mailed out last month and the first payment is due Friday July 17th, with the second installment coming due September 17th. Christian County Treasurer Colleen Hadley says its uber important to make sure that all of the information on your statement is correct.

Anderson Prairie Visitors Center Open In Pana

The newly-established living museum and visitors center at Oak Street Station in Pana will now serve as a starting point for visitors and school field trips touring the many attractions at Anderson Prairie including the Tallgrass Butterfly House, Guided wildflower walks, Bird watching, hiking, and many other nature activities. Pana School’s Biology teacher and site manager Dave Nance says the new visitors center will give folks a place to learn the ecology of the Prairie and the rich history of Pana.

The Greater Taylorville Chamber of Commerce welcomed it’s newest business to town with a ribbon cutting Wednesday. Bokevos Consignment Boutique opened its doors for business following the ceremony and features upscale women’s clothing and home décor products. Owner Jamie Tennant says she the community is encouraged to bring their gently used products in for consignment.

Crop Report: Hot Week Jumpstarts Growth

Autopsy Released On Drowned Swimmer

The autopsy is complete on 17 year old Koty Cook, who died Monday evening while swimming in Lake Taylorville. Christian County Coroner Amy Winans says preliminary results show that Mr. Cook died from asphyxiation due to drowning. Winans says toxicology results will be available in a few weeks. Cook was pronounced dead at Taylorville Memorial Hospital Monday after being pulled from the water when he reportedly swam out past a roped off area. There were no lifeguards on duty but signs are posted at the lake’s beach urging caution to swimmers. The family of Koty Cook is being served by Shafer-Perfetti Funeral Home, Taylorville.
Rockies Express Flips Switch On Compressor Facility

Rockies Express Pipeline Officials fired up of the engines at the pipleline's Blue Mound Compressor facility Tuesday. The switch on the engines was flipped, following the beginning of service of natural gas through the local portion of the pipeline this week. Rockies Express spokesperson Allen Fore says the 60 million dollar compressor station will pressurize the natural gas extracted from the Rocky Mountains to heat homes and provide electricity along the 1600 mile plus mile pipeline that will stretch all the way from the Rockie’s to western Ohio.

Ag. Experts Abound At Dudley Smith Field Day

Grazing costs was the main focus of this years Dudley Smith Farm Cow Calf field day held (Tuesday) at the Dudley Smith Farm between Taylorville and Pana. Among the speakers at the annual event was Retired UI Extension Animal Systems Educator Ed Ballard, who discussed 2008’s grazing results for cool season grass.

Kiwanis Hear From Pana Hospital Officials

This week’s Kiwanis Club Program program was presented by Missy Rybolt, Marketing Coordinator, and Nancy Alexander, Health & Wellness Coordinator representing Pana Community Hospital. They gave a report on the new 11,740 sq. ft. Rehab/Wellness Center being added to the hospital. It will allow them to
enhance physical, occupational & speech therapy as well as physical, cardiac
and pulmonary rehabilitation. One of the significant additions will be
aquatic therapy. Their vision is for people to continue to attend the wellness
center after they complete their treatment. They will also offer programs
for kids as well as a smoking cessation program. The target date for opening
is September of this year. Rybolt said Dr. Molly Beyers was a driving
force in bringing the center to fruition.
They was one guest in attendance at today’s meeting.

SIU Medical Feature: Fireworks Pose Fun; Danger

Thousands of people go to hospital emergency rooms with injuries from fireworks each year. Most of these injuries occur around the Fourth of July.
Fireworks and celebrations go together, especially this time of year. But fireworks can be dangerous, causing serious injuries if proper precautions are not taken. Dr. Elvin Zook, professor of plastic and reconstructive surgery at SIU School of Medicine in Springfield, explains the most common injuries from fireworks.

Experts Forecast A Drop In Driving Over Holiday Weekend

Triple-A is forecasting a nearly two-percent reduction in auto travel this holiday weekend. That's not much in comparison to the ten-and-a-half-percent reduction in car travel last year, but it's not exactly good news for the travel industry either, since the Fourth of July is typically the busiest time of the year in terms of car travel. Triple-A spokesman Geoff Sundstrom says there is a silver lining in this gloomy forecast.

UPDATE: Lake Taylorville Drowning Victim Identified

(Taylorville) The 17-year-old drowning victim that was pulled from Lake Taylorville Monday afternoon has been identified as Koty A. Cook of Taylorville. According to Taylorville Police, witnesses say Cook and another person swam beyond a roped off area at the Lake’s beach when he went under water. Police say attempts to assist Cook were unsuccessful, and he was pulled from the water by emergency personnel just after 4:30 and taken to Taylorville Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead. There are no lifeguards on duty at the lake, but there are signs posted urging caution to swimmers. An autopsy is scheduled for today at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. The incident remains under investigation by the Taylorville Police Department.
Springfield Clinic Construction Completion Targeted For End Of July

Taylorville Memorial Hospital officials say they expect the construction of the new Springfield Clinic on the campus of TMH to be completed sometime in late July. Construction on the project began just about a year ago, and once completed, will facilitate physicians from outside of Taylorville practicing in the area. TMH CEO Dan Raab explains that once the facility is completed, physicians could begin practicing as early as sometime in August.

The Final Countdown: Christian County Fair Kicks Off July 7th

After the smoke clears from all the fireworks this 4th of July weekend, the 86th Annual Christian County Fair will prepare to open up its gates. The weeklong event kicks off next Tuesday at 8 AM, and wraps up on Sunday at 6:30 pm. Ron Flemming, of the Christian County fair board, highlights some of the main attractions.

House Bails Out Illinois Social Services For Now

The Illinois house has passed legislation to help prevent cuts to some social service programs.
House lawmakers approved short term borrowing to make payments to the state’s pension systems. Representative Kevin McCarthy of Orland Park says that should free up about two billion dollars.

The Illinois Department of Transportation is urging drivers to slow down in construction zones this summer.
You may have received an email lately, warning about photo enforcement at construction zones in Illinois that could mean huge fines for drivers speeding even just a little bit. IDOT spokesperson Paris Ervin says it isn’t a new law, and that cameras will be ready to take your picture if you’re driving too fast.

Gas Expected To Begin Flowing Into 'Rockies' Pipeline Today

Natural gas is expected to begin flowing into the Rockies Express Pipeline in Illinois today (Monday). It’s been a rocky process as of late for Rockies Express; flooding along the Wabash River in April (on the Illinois/Indiana border) caused officials to delay the delivery date of natural gas. With the setbacks now in the rearview mirror, Rockies Express Spokesperson Allen Fore says he’s excited to have natural gas finally flowing through Illinois.

Triad Warns Of Phone; E-Mail Scams

Scam artists are preying on Christian County residents. In recent weeks, three scams in particular have claimed victims. Christian County Triad Chairman Richard Peters says the first scam tricks people into thinking they’ve won a car.
Click here for audio The second scam asks people to provide their vehicle identification number over the phone. Peters was targeted by this scam. After receiving the suspicious call, he contacted three automobile manufacturers to find out what was going on.
Click here for audioUnlike the first two, the third scam preys on people via email. Peters says the scam e-mail looks official, and contains a fake F.B.I. letterhead.

All - Star Cast Expected At Cow - Calf Field Day

The U of I Christian County extension is revving up for the Beef Cow-Calf Field Day, which takes place tomorrow (Tuesday) at the Dudley Smith Farm. The event begins at 9:30 am with registration, and runs until 1:30 pm. U of I extension natural resources management educator Gary Letterly says the field day will feature presentations from University of Kentucky Forage Specialist Dr. Gary Lacefield, as well as Ed Ballard, a retired U of I animal systems educator.

The Taylorville Chamber of Commerce plans on the city being well represented for Hometown Pride Day at the Illinois State Fair on Saturday August 15th. The chamber is just now starting to get a head count on how many people from the community will attend. Chamber President and CEO Fred Ronnow says there is plenty of room and space for exhibitors.

Thursday Night Crash Claims Life

Just before midnight on Thursday, a crash claimed the life of 32 year old Shawn Sheets, of Pekin, Illinois. The crash occurred on route 29 near the Sangamon River Bridge in Sangamon County. 32 year old Alex Fyfe of Springfield, was driving a red GMC Sonoma pickup, Sheets; a motorcycle. Fyfe’s pickup struck Sheets head on. Sheets was later pronounced dead at the scene by the Sangamon County Coroner.
According to witnesses, Fyfe fled the scene on foot. Fyfe was later located at his home in Springfield by the Illinois State Police and the Sangamon County Sheriffs Department. Fyfe was taken into custody by the Illinois State Police and charged with
aggravated DUI, leaving the scene of a fatal crash, and improper lane usage.
The incident is currently under investigation.
